Summary: After her delivery vehicle broke down, a female postal carrier was brutally mauled by five bulldogs.
The incident: As she made her rounds delivering mail to homes in The Lake Estates in Interlachen, FL, Pamela Jane Rock, an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, liked to spend a little time chatting with the homeowners.
Not only did Rock try to get to know the people who lived along her route, but she also liked to bring candy and other treats for their children.
But one day as Rock was making her rounds, her delivery truck broke down. As the woman was trying to fix her vehicle, she suddenly heard loud barking and turned to see a pack of five bulldogs racing toward her. The dogs knocked Rock to the ground, then began to maul her. She screamed for help.
The response: Several neighbors heard Rock’s anguished cries and raced over to assist her. One neighbor used a gun to shoot a bullet in the air. Eventually, the owner of the dogs was able to get the animals off Rock.
By the time emergency responders arrived, Rock was on the ground bleeding profusely and writhing in pain. On the way to the hospital, she suffered cardiac arrest and was soon declared dead.
The aftermath: Law enforcement officials determined that the dogs had escaped from the yard in which they were housed by moving some rocks and climbing under a fence. Following the incident, the dogs were euthanized.
Rock, 61, was remembered for her cheerful smile and warm manner. “Happy that our lives crossed in this lifetime,” wrote one friend. “I will try to push aside my anger at what happened to you and find comfort in knowing that you are no longer in pain and are at peace.”
